Wicked Good

Wicked Good

“Maybe my poems aren’t that great, but I know some people who like them. Anyways, it’s the best I can do.” —Adam Sandler (“Longfellow Deeds”), Mr. Deeds

I heard this quote and it struck me like a hard punch in the nose. It is from the movie Mr. Deeds and it rings with so much truth I had to make a mental note to always remember it for future reference. This is important! Before every wannabe writer gets too full of themselves, maybe it is important to keep in mind that there will only ever be one Shakespeare, one Poe, one King. No matter how good a writer may be, there is a high bar to clear to beat the greatest writers of all time. It is like Clint Eastwood (“Harry Callahan”) in Magnum Force liked to say, “A man’s gotta know his limitations.” So, to reiterate on Longfellow Deeds and his statement: It may not be good, some people like it, and it’s the best he can do. That is all. Forget about it. If you don’t like it, go watch Youtube or scroll Facebook for a while. Do not put someone down for their artistic endeavors unless you can do better. Even then it behooves one to be graceful and show some class and be cool to others. There are too many assholes stinking up the place already, why add to the shitpile with your worthless criticism? Dig it? As my grandpa Paige used to say, “Go piss up a rope.” If you don’t have anything nice to say . . . that is sound advice. Good day.
